History Of Memphis

Memphis is one of the metropolitans of the State of Tennessee. It has a pleasant weather and ample greenery. It has a rich musical and cultural heritage. Memphis has a very rich and interesting history. The Chickasaw tribe was the first to settle in Memphis. This magnificent city was founded in 1819.


Native American Indians were the first inhabitants of Memphis. They lived along the bluffs of Mississippi River for almost 10,000 years. The Chickasaw tribe, which settled in this region, was also known as Mound builders because of the huge mounds they built. These mounds are now a part of the famous De Soto Park. Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto was the first European to cross the Mississippi river in the year 1541. Later, Sieur de LaSalle built the Fort Prudhomme.


After the conclusion of the French and Indian war in 1763, England conquered this land. The Indians, French, English, Spanish and new Americans lived together in Memphis, for a while until Tennessee became a U.S. territory in the year 1790. Tennessee later became an independent state in 1796. The Chickasaw tribe surrendered this territory in 1818.


General/President Andrew Jackson, General James Winchester and Judge John Overton were considered the official founders of Memphis. The Memphis city was assessed and planned in the year 1819. Initially, Memphis was just four blocks wide, with a sparse population of hardly fifty people. Marcus Winchester was the first mayor of Memphis.


Germans and Irish were the first migrants to come to Memphis and establish their businesses. They constructed churches in Memphis, St Mary's church being one of the oldest among them. Pinch district is one of the earliest neighborhoods in Memphis.


Memphis has always been a hub for markets, exchanges, travel and distribution. Memphis flourished due to the river and the cotton fields, popularly known as "King Cotton."
